Zanzibar is an archipelago located off the coast of East Africa and consists of many clusters of small islands neighbouring two larger islands, Unguja (more commonly known as Zanzibar), as well as Pemba. Zanzibar is the main island and the capital city of Zanzibar City is located there. Our Zanzibar Lodge Specials are perfect for anyone looking for a brilliant and affordable island holiday.
Located on the main Zanzibar Island is the ancient Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the only traditional trading towns left standing in original architecture. Originally solely Swahili, Stone Town changed as more people came onto the island, and now consists of Arab, European and Indian influences, blending to make the perfect mix of culture, architecture and fashion. The houses and the hotels and lodges are packed along the bustling street, providing guests with a homely and comfortable feel. The bazaar is always open, busy and bustling, with people negotiating and buying various different things ranging from spices and fruit to hand-made crafts, that make the perfect gifts for family and friends. Renowned buildings include Old Fort monument, The Wonder House, a large palace built by a sultan, and numerous different and beautiful churches line the street. Being in the middle of Stone Town makes you feel as if you have stepped back into the pages of pure, untouched history.
The Island also has some of the most brilliant white sanded beaches in the world, and the warm Indian Ocean is calm and inviting. The Nungwi Beach, located north, is a luxurious beach that has a fun and bustling atmosphere. The hotels overlook the beach from the coral reefs they’re built on and make the perfect vantage point to see the sparkling ocean from. There are various other luxury beaches like Nungwi, including the rarely visited Kiwengwa and Pongwe to the east, that are just like Nungwi but because not many travellers go to that side of the island.
Pemba Island is the second largest island, and it means Green Island because of its famous rolling green hills, covered in dense, lush forest. The most frequented towns are the capital Chake-Chake as well as Mkoani and Wete. There are an array of luxury hotels and seaside villas on our Zanzibar Lodge Specials page that offer up pure luxury for an amazing price, so book with us today!
The Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar, and it homes the Zanzibar red colobus, who are only around 1000 in the park, as well as bush babies and the Sykes monkeys and the strange four toed tree hyrax, who is believed to be the only hyrax that mentioned to survive in the forest, as it acclimatized quite quickly. Big animals include the Zanzibar leopard, which many inhabitants believe to have gone extinct as the last sighting of the mysterious creature was over ten years ago! There are smaller leopards on the islands as well. The park also has an impressive butterfly population with over 50 different species, as well as 40 different types of birds, their songs following you as you navigate your way through the national park. The national park is very popular with tourists and a wonderful way to get to interact with nature.
Zanzibar has a very popular and bubbling tourism industry but it is also a spice haven, growing, harvesting and exporting black pepper, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Zanzibar was a major trade route, most notably for the Assyrians and old clay pots and ornaments were found and put on display. The beautiful House of Wonders is a stunning expansive palace built by Sultan Barghash bin Said and is the tallest building in Stone Town. The palace has been turned into a museum now, exhibiting traditional Swahili culture and other East African culture blended together perfectly. The palace entrance has two bronze cannons, stolen from the Portuguese by the Persians in 1622. The cannons were later donated to the Sultans of Oman who felt them fit to sit in front of the palace in Zanzibar. The House of Wonders is currently being repaired and the museum has relocated for the time being.
