Tanzania has 16 national parks, including the Ruaha National Park, the largest national park in Tanzania, and gets its name from the Ruaha River that flows along the border of the park. The park is more remote than other national parks but it has diverse wildlife and stunning baobab trees around the park to show off. Ruaha has a vast elephant population, with impressively large herds that frequent the park. There are also over 500 species of birds, not including migratory birds which also visit the park. Lion, cheetah and leopard also roam freely. The conservation efforts of the Tanzanian government are under strain because of the drying up of the Ruaha River, which used to flow all year but has now begun flowing periodically and sometimes completely drying up, for unknown reasons. Ruaha National Park offers an array of accommodation, ranging from chalets to seasonal safari camp sites. Game drives are readily available as well as other safari activities.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and situated near the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The land was originally inhabited by the Maasai people, and is of huge archaeological importance. The main feature of the conservation area is the massive Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world’s largest volcanic caldera. The crater was voted as one of The Seven Natural Wonders of Africa because of its uniqueness. The crater is inhabited by animals, including the rare black rhino, the Cape buffalo, hippo as well as a variety of wildebeest, buck and antelope, as well as zebra. The crater is more famously known to house the Masai lion, a majestic creature that has a small dwindling population, due to inbreeding as no other lions enter the crater.
