Rwanda has two renowned national parks, namely Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park, ensuring you get the ultimate wildlife experience. Volcanoes National Park is the oldest national park in Africa, and the expansive park is filled with fantastic wildlife that is left to thrive in their natural environment. Volcanoes National Park was originally a smaller area that was created to protect the mountain gorilla, but expanded to what it is today. The park is renowned for its gorilla trekking, famed researcher Dian Fossey conducted most of her research on mountain gorilla here, and started various conservation efforts to stop poaching of the mountain gorilla. Volcanoes Park has also seen pain, as it struggled immensely with the poaching problem and acted as a battle ground for the Rwandan genocide. Despite this, the park has remained open and continued to protect these majestic animals.
Treks include tracking and following the gorillas as well as watching them interact in their natural environment. The treks take place early in the morning and one day trips can last anywhere from 4 hours to the entire day. Spotting gorillas is not guaranteed, but your expert guide will know where to look, to make sure you have a thrilling experience. There are numerous gorilla trekking packages available that range from a standard 3-day trek to a 3-day gorilla safari and a 4-day double gorilla tour. There is also a 5-day gorilla and chimpanzee trek, that allows for more time to see the apes. Other animals in the park include golden monkeys, spotted hyenas, elephants and buffalo, black-fronted duiker, bushbuck as well as an array of birdlife. Golden Monkey treks are also readily available.
Akagera National Park is named after the Akagera River that flows through it. Akagera has beautiful rolling hills, plains, and papyrus swamps, making it one of the most picture-perfect destinations. The park is also home to many big game species, including the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, elephant), as well as zebra and waterbuck. Akagera also boasts over 500 different bird species.
