Namibia is home to the largest canyon in Africa, the Fish River Canyon, which is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The river usually floods in summer, creating amazing, picturesque views. The canyon has fascinating geological formations, and the canyon hiking trail is one of the best and most popular hiking trails across the entire Southern Africa. The trail tests the fitness and limits of hikers from all over the world – the trail is designed with a number of different footpaths that allow the hiker to stop whenever they wish. Hikers have to carry all their own food, drinks and bags as there are no shops or stops on the trail. A hiking permit is also required, no one under the age of 12 is permitted and a certificate from a medical doctor stating your fitness level must be presented.

Namibia is incredibly unique as it features two deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari. The Namib Desert is much more of a true desert, as opposed to the Kalahari. The desert features magnificently tall sand dunes of golden and copper sand. The Sossusvlei are the highest sand dunes in the world. The desert is filled with endemic animals and plants, such as the welwitschia mirabilis, a type of shrub that grows two big leaves in its lifetime. Some antelopes and bucks, like the gemsbok, are known to frequent the desert at times. There are also ostriches and a variety of unique beetles. The Kalahari has vast amounts of red sand and sustains a varied eco-system, as it receives a small amount of rainfall and has a surrounding bush. There was once an abundance of big game animals such as lions, cheetah, elephants and giraffes, but as the small rivers have mostly dried up so the riverbeds are used as grazing spots. Migratory birds are also a common sight. Despite being a desert the Kalahari has a varied amount of flora, including acacia trees, and different types of endemic fruit trees. Savanna grass also covers the red sand in some areas. The Kalahari Desert is a beautiful contrast – an arid desert land that is still able to sustain life.
Namibia also has the largest underground lake in the world, Dragon’s Breath, as well as the largest free-roaming cheetah population in the world.
If you are keen on a spooky adventure, pay a visit to the amazing Skeleton Coast, and view the ship wrecks that are littered across the rocks, as well as elephants slowly making their way from the desert, avoiding the cold Atlantic.
